Syair unggas (burung nuri) Hamzah FansuriHamzah Fansuri's poem of the bird (the parrot)

Akhir abad ke-16 – awal abad ke-17Late 16th – early 17th century

A symbolic poem by Hamzah Fansuri that portrays the cosmology of creation through the figure of a parrot born of light. Each part of the bird's body is named after a Sufi concept, such as the universal intellect (its feathers), the Supreme Pen (its claws), Majesty and Beauty (its feet) and the Preserved Tablet (its heart). The poem parallels Nuruddin ar-Raniry's account of the Light of Muhammad. It shows Hamzah's mastery in conveying metaphysics through verse.

The bird of this poem is born of light and dwells upon the ‘King's Throne’. Its nest is the ‘hidden treasure’, alluding to the sacred hadith of a God who wished to be known, and its field is called the realm of Lahut. The poem then maps the bird's body onto key concepts: the universal intellect as its feathers, the Supreme Pen as its claws, Majesty and Beauty as its feet, the First Light as its fingers and the Preserved Tablet as its heart. At its climax the bird is identified with Ahmad, the first Prophet, and from its light the whole cosmos, the heavens and the earth radiate.

The bird as a symbol of the soul has a long history in Persian Sufi literature, and Hamzah is known to have been familiar with authors such as ‘Attar. In his hands the image becomes a compact, memorable map of cosmology. The sequence is read in parallel with Nuruddin ar-Raniry's account, which places the Light of Muhammad as the first creation, followed by intellect, pen and spirit, before heaven and earth. The parallel is notable given that the two scholars are often placed in opposing camps.

As literature, the poem shows why Hamzah is called the father of Acehnese letters and was influential across the Malay world. The four-line syair form with a single end rhyme carries complex metaphysical ideas to a wider readership. The full text is available in critical editions of Hamzah Fansuri's works.
