Siklon Tropis SenyarTropical Cyclone Senyar

Berstatus siklon tropis 26–27 November 2025; punah 30 November 2025Tropical-cyclone status 26–27 November 2025; dissipated 30 November 2025

Senyar was a tropical cyclone that formed in the Strait of Malacca on 26 November 2025 about 90 kilometres south-east of Lhokseumawe, with maximum winds of 43 knots and a central pressure of 998 hPa. It lasted only around 30 hours as a cyclone, yet it delivered 411 millimetres of rain in 24 hours at Kuala, Bireuen. Senyar is recorded as the first cyclone to have genuinely formed within the Strait of Malacca, a near-equatorial area that in theory does not favour cyclogenesis. Its winds were moderate; its destructive power came from rain held over an already saturated atmosphere.

Senyar developed from a disturbance coded 95B, monitored by the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre Jakarta from 21 November 2025. A low-pressure area formed on 22 November, the system became a tropical depression around 25 November, and at 00:00 UTC on 26 November it was classified as a tropical cyclone at 5.0°N, 98.0°E. Its forward speed slowed from about seven knots to two or three knots as it neared land, keeping heavy rain over the same areas for longer. On 27 November it weakened, turned east into the South China Sea, briefly re-intensified, and dissipated on 30 November.

Its meteorological oddity lies in its latitude. At 5°N the Coriolis effect is normally too weak to organise cyclonic rotation. Meteorological literature records Senyar as only the second documented cyclone in the Strait of Malacca after Tropical Storm Vamei in 2001, and the first to form there and then move into the South China Sea. Proposed physical explanations include convergence of westerly winds slowing as they entered the narrow strait, sea-surface temperatures of 29–30 °C, and anomalous regional atmospheric dynamics.

Senyar also did not act alone. BMKG's outlook recorded an active Madden-Julian Oscillation in phase 6 over Aceh, active equatorial Kelvin and Rossby waves, a weak La Niña and a negative Indian Ocean Dipole. This superposition explains why a moderate cyclone produced such extreme rainfall.

One correction matters: the name Senyar was assigned by the India Meteorological Department as the regional specialised centre in New Delhi, not by BMKG, because the system formed outside Jakarta's area of responsibility. Cyclone Ditwah was active almost simultaneously in the northern Indian Ocean, but there is no evidence of direct dynamic interaction between the two.

Anomali lintang rendahA low-latitude anomaly

Cyclone formation at 5°N challenges the assumption that near-equatorial areas are safe from tropical cyclones.

Hujan, bukan anginRain, not wind

Senyar's destructiveness came from slow movement and a very moist atmosphere, not from wind speed.

Pemicu, bukan satu-satunya sebabTrigger, not sole cause

Rainfall explains the volume of water, but not why the flow carried sediment and logs that destroyed settlements.
