Religi, budaya, dan mitos sebagai kompas: fase-fase kebudayaan AcehReligion, culture and myth as compass: the phases of Acehnese culture
This framework reads cultural change in Aceh from three anchors: religion, culture and myth. All three are placed within four historical spaces: traditional, modern, postmodern and planetary civilisation. In the traditional phase, each served as a compass guiding social action. Later change, especially from the Dutch arrival onward, is understood as the destruction of a Sufi-inspired edifice that had once shaped Aceh's public sphere.
In the traditional phase religion was the primary guide: every act had to start from a true understanding of faith. The Islam practised was Shafi‘i, Ash‘ari and Ghazalian, yet the historical record also shows a presence of Shi‘a Islam and of Ibn ‘Arabi's school of thought. Persia is said to have shaped literary grammar, basic concepts of government and intellectual tradition, while Shi‘ism appears more as a pattern of cultural reproduction. These beliefs then took form in the governance of the sultanate and in the ideology of resistance to European colonisers.
Culture in the same phase was also a compass, on the principle that neither adat nor belief may be abandoned. Acehnese society is described as having engineered a culture that reduced the dominance of Hindu and Buddhist legacies, crystallising its metaphysical foundation in fixed norms such as the Adat Meukuta Alam, reusam and governance grounded in local cosmology. Culture was thus a ‘guide to the order of life’, producing great works that are nonetheless rarely taught in schools and universities.
Myth completed the triad as a source of local knowledge. It was not mere folklore but a binding force of identity, which made the storyteller's role crucial in ensuring that people grasped the wisdom behind a tale. This opens the way to structural analysis in the manner of Lévi-Strauss. What remains open is how the three compasses change as Aceh enters the modern, postmodern and planetary phases; the framework has so far developed only the first phase in detail.
