Logika terbalik ‘what if not?’ dan cakrawala sejarah AcehThe 'what if not?' inversion and the horizons of Acehnese history
Pemetaan sejarah Aceh menurut arah mata anginMapping Acehnese history by the points of the compass
The inversion test gauges Aceh's significance by imagining its absence: what would Southeast Asia, the Malay world and Indonesia mean without Aceh, and what would Aceh mean without Islam? The question opens up historical horizons stretching to Java, the Malay Peninsula, Barus, Ayutthaya and Temasek. Acehnese history is then mapped by compass direction, with the Middle East, the Malay lands, Java and Sumatra as its faces. The approach moves history-writing beyond simple periodisation towards area studies.
Untuk membuktikannya, diajukan cara berpikir ‘what if not?’: Asia Tenggara, Melayu, dan Indonesia dibayangkan tanpa Aceh, dan Aceh dibayangkan tanpa Islam.
So many lands and states have touched Aceh that its history cannot be reduced to the history of Aceh Besar and Banda Aceh. To make the point, a 'what if not?' mode of reasoning is proposed: Southeast Asia, the Malay world and Indonesia are imagined without Aceh, and Aceh is imagined without Islam. The answers contribute knowledge not only about Aceh but about the face of Southeast Asian civilisation as a whole. The span is described as running from west to east (Java), from south to north (Malaya), from the southeast (Barus) to the northwest (Ayutthaya or Krung Thep) and from the southwest to the northeast (Temasek).
Acehnese history is accordingly mapped by the points of the compass. Facing the Middle East, it covers the coming of Islam, social and intellectual history, diplomacy, the influence of Arab thought and the Hadrami diaspora; historical scholarship recognises Aceh as the place where Islam first took root in the archipelago. Facing the Malay Peninsula, it covers Aceh's contribution to Malay identity, the history of Malay kingdoms, the diplomacy of Acehnese fighters in Penang, Acehnese diaspora and migration, Acehnese influence on Malay statecraft, trade, and conversely the Malay presence in Aceh. Facing Java, it covers Aceh's role in the Islamisation of Java, Aceh–Java relations after 17 August 1945, and the phenomenon of Acehnese 'Javanising' fellow Acehnese. All of this also revives the foundations of Sumatran history and of the polities from Sabang to Barus and Siak.
With such a map, writing Acehnese history as local knowledge need not follow periodisation; it can proceed as area studies. Taufik Abdullah stresses that local knowledge and traditional historiography are now treated as legitimate sources of historical information. The conclusion is that Acehnese history is not a new discipline; many works already address these faces, but they need to be presented within the paradigm of a History of Acehnese Civilisation.
