Haji sebagai rite of passage dalam masyarakat AcehThe hajj as a rite of passage in Acehnese society

Kerangka analitisAnalytical framework

Drawing on Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner, the Acehnese hajj can be read as a three-phase rite of passage. Peusijuek, the feast and meusapat mark separation; the journey and worship in the Holy Land form the transition, in which social identities dissolve into spiritual equality; homecoming with the title Haji is reincorporation. Through this cycle the hajj reproduces social, political and religious values. The framework also explains why the hajj in Aceh is always communal.

In anthropology, rites of passage comprise separation, transition and reincorporation. In the Acehnese case, separation takes the form of peusijuek, the feast and meusapat: the pilgrim is announced, blessed and reconciled with neighbours before leaving the village. Transition spans the journey, about forty days today and far longer in the age of ships; in the Holy Land social identities dissolve into spiritual equality as pilgrims confront a global crowd and unsettling experiences. Reincorporation comes with the return, when the pilgrim is warmly received, prayed over and given the honorific Haji or Teungku Haji.

The framework clarifies several distinctive features. First, why the hajj in Aceh is never a private matter: every phase involves the community, from the feast kitchen to the escort to the embarkation point. Second, why post-hajj status is so closely watched: reincorporation carries the expectation that a haji will be an exemplar and a keeper of harmony, so lapses attract ridicule. Third, why the rite is constantly reproduced: each season revives the imagination of the sanctity of the Holy Land among those who have yet to go.

More broadly, the Acehnese hajj can be read as a meeting point of local and global. Where Clifford Geertz spoke of the localisation of Islam in Java, Aceh shows a localisation that still points towards the universal: village rites serve to affirm the connection to the centre of the Muslim world. The hajj becomes a microcosm of Acehnese life, sacred yet social, personal yet communal, as a local saying puts it in suggesting that one person's hajj is everybody's business.
