The Price of Freedom: catatan harian Hasan di TiroThe Price of Freedom: the diary of Hasan di Tiro

1984; terjemahan dan seabad 20251984; translation and centenary 2025

The Price of Freedom adalah catatan harian Tgk.

The Price of Freedom is the diary of Tgk. Hasan Muhammad di Tiro, founder of GAM, published in 1984, recording the early years of the armed struggle and his political views on Aceh. Its Indonesian translation, The Price of Freedom: Catatan yang Belum Selesai (‘Unfinished Notes’), was produced by Haekal Afifa, founder of the Hasan Muhammad di Tiro Museum. At the centenary of Hasan di Tiro’s birth in September 2025 the book was discussed at UIN Ar-Raniry as part of an effort to revive his intellectual legacy. Speakers stressed Hasan di Tiro as an often-misunderstood intellectual, not merely the leader of an armed movement.

Hasan di Tiro is widely known as the proclaimer of Aceh Merdeka, but his written legacy is rarely read by the public. The Price of Freedom contains diary entries from the early phase of the struggle, when he and his followers lived in the Acehnese jungle, together with reflections on Aceh’s history, sovereignty and dignity. In it he also recorded those who accompanied him, including praise for Dr Husaini M. Hasan as God’s gift to the struggle, a passage later quoted in Husaini’s memoir. The book is therefore an important primary source for reading the thinking of GAM’s founder in his own hand.

The Indonesian translation, The Price of Freedom: Catatan yang Belum Selesai, was produced by Haekal Afifa, who also founded the Hasan Muhammad di Tiro Museum. The subtitle ‘unfinished notes’ echoes how many Acehnese see the man: a story still in motion and open to new interpretation. Publishing and rereading his writings is presented as a way to correct mistaken public perceptions, since for some of the younger generation Hasan di Tiro is known only through stigma or myth.

On 25 September 2025, as part of the centenary of Hasan di Tiro’s birth, the Student Executive Council (DEMA) of the Faculty of Sharia and Law at UIN Ar-Raniry and Halaqah Aneuk Bangsa held a discussion and review of the book in the Museum Theatre Hall of UIN Ar-Raniry. Hundreds of students, academics and young activists attended. The DEMA chair, Razif Al Farisy, insisted that Hasan di Tiro’s notes must continue to be published so that the young can read and know history, and that students must step forward when the government takes no role in such commemorations.

Haekal Afifa called Hasan di Tiro the father of Acehnese intellectualism, often misunderstood. In his view the book shows that Hasan di Tiro was not an atheist, not a liberal and not a terrorist, and that he awakened Aceh’s collective identity both in his lifetime and after his death. The legal scholar Wiratmadinata added that Hasan di Tiro was not only the initiator of GAM but a thinker with ideas of national and international weight. His concept of freedom, he said, goes beyond a narrow meaning: freedom comes not only through weapons but also through reading, learning and knowing Acehnese identity.

The discussion was part of the ‘100 Years of Hasan Tiro’ series, whose high point was the launch the same evening in Banda Aceh of Haekal Afifa’s book Jalan Pikiran 100 Tahun Tengku Hasan di Tiro (‘The Mind of Tengku Hasan di Tiro at 100’). Together with the collection Hasan Tiro: The Unfinished Story of Aceh, edited by Husaini Nurdin, the series marks a shift in how Aceh treats GAM’s founder: from political symbol and charismatic figure towards an object of intellectual study. Ideas such as ‘Tiroism’ and the ‘paradigm of liberation’ began to be discussed as frameworks of thought rather than mere slogans.

For Aceh studies, The Price of Freedom matters because it shows how an ideology of resistance was built on historical memory, sovereignty and dignity. Rereading it at the centenary of his birth, two decades after the Helsinki MoU, also raises a reflective question: does today’s peace match the vision of a dignified Aceh he imagined, or has it drifted from the ideals he fought for? The book thus serves a double purpose, as a historical document of the conflict and as a mirror for post-peace Acehnese politics.
