Filsafat, tasawuf, dan ulama-filosof: posisi Aceh dalam tradisi filsafat IslamPhilosophy, Sufism and scholar-philosophers: Aceh's place in the Islamic philosophical tradition
In Islam, philosophy often touches the spiritual dimension and is hard to separate from Sufism. Unlike modern Western philosophy, which tends to lead people away from God, the depth of a Muslim's philosophy is seen as drawing them closer to God. Almost all Muslim philosophers, from Persia to Andalusia, were also religious scholars and polymaths. Aceh has not produced philosophers of their calibre, but it has produced thinkers able to lead their society out of every crisis.
The Persian philosophical tradition stands out as especially strong compared with other parts of the Middle East, with names such as Abu Bakr al-Razi, Abu Ya‘qub al-Sijistani, al-Biruni, Miskawayh, Nasir-i Khusraw, al-Juwayni, al-Ghazali, Jalal al-Din al-Dawwani, Suhrawardi, Ibn Sina and Mulla Sadra. Andalusia contributed Ibn Masarra, Ibn Hazm, Ibn Bajja, Ibn Tufayl and Ibn Rushd, while the early pioneers include al-Kindi, al-Farabi and al-‘Amiri. They were known as jurists and scientists as well as philosophers, explaining God, nature and humankind in a single breath.
This diversity raises a problem of naming: is this Arab philosophy, Muslim philosophy, Persian philosophy or Shi‘a philosophy, and what should Muslim philosophers in Europe be called? Notably, the sharp Sunni–Shi‘a tensions found elsewhere hardly appear within the philosophical tradition. Every great philosophical tradition is also framed by belief: Hinduism and Buddhism in India, Confucianism in China, Zoroastrianism in Persia. By the same logic, Acehnese philosophy will be framed by Islam, and its greatest danger is simply copying the concepts of Western or Islamic philosophy.
Aceh records no philosopher who broke open the history of ideas, yet its conflict-laden history has repeatedly produced thinkers with philosophical grounding. Its society also shows a spirit of endurance against the siege of outside ideas. These two facts, the presence of thinkers and the resilience of society, become the material for tracing the spirit that has allowed Aceh to keep asserting its existence.
