Syajarat al-Yaqīn, ‘Arsy, dan waktu Kerajaan LangitShajarat al-Yaqin, the Throne and the time of the Heavenly Kingdom
The kitab tradition in Aceh depicts the coming-into-being of the Light of Muhammad through the image of a four-branched tree named Shajarat al-Muttaqin or Shajarat al-Yaqin. Another report says the Light of Muhammad was given a form like a peacock and set upon that tree, glorifying God. The Throne ('Arsh) is described as created from a green gem and carried by angels. The creation of the seven heavens and earths in six periods is reckoned in the time of the Heavenly Kingdom, where one day equals a thousand years on earth.
The book Kashf al-Ghaybiyya opens its first chapter with the coming-into-being of the supreme spirit, the Light of Muhammad: God made a tree with four branches named Shajarat al-Muttaqin, or in another report Shajarat al-Yaqin, and then made the Light of Muhammad. The name may be rendered 'tree of the God-fearing' or 'tree of certainty'. The image recalls the Qur'anic tree whose fruit was forbidden to Adam and Eve. Another report cited by al-Raniri says that from the form of the Light of Muhammad something like a peacock was made, set upon the tree, glorifying God.
On the Throne, al-Raniri writes that it was made from a green gem and is greater than all created things. Qur'an al-Haqqa (69):17 speaks of eight angels bearing the Throne on that day, and al-Mu'min (40):7 describes the Throne-bearers glorifying God and seeking forgiveness for the believers. The seven layers of heaven and earth were made from foam, with all they contain, in six periods. Citing al-Sajda (32):4–5, one day in the Heavenly Kingdom equals a thousand years on earth, so the six days of creation are reckoned as six thousand years; this reckoning affirms that every stage of creation uses the space and time of the Heavenly Kingdom.
Such a cosmology is judged very different from the cosmological systems of Java and Sunda. The detail with which Acehnese scholars treated creation shows that every movement of life is inseparable from life's beginnings in the Heavenly Kingdom. The system was sometimes expressed in poetry, as in the verses of Hamzah Fansuri that depict the Heavenly Kingdom in symbolic language, a sign that Acehnese scholars long made the study of the cosmos a foundation of thought for Acehnese civilisation.
