Anak komplek dan alienasi identitas‘Complex children’ and identity alienation
Era industri gas Aceh Utara hingga perumahan elite pascatsunamiFrom the North Aceh gas-industry era to post-tsunami elite housing
‘Complex children’ are the generation raised in the housing estates of large companies in North Aceh and other elite compounds: schooled by company bus, holidaying by company plane and socialising in languages other than Acehnese. Born and raised on Aceh’s natural wealth, they are strangers to its traditions, even ashamed to call themselves Acehnese. The phenomenon exemplifies identity alienation in a rapidly changing society.
During the conflict, students from these compounds were noted as the group most indifferent to suffering beyond the fence. They formed their own community from primary school to university and rarely mixed with others. Social critics stressed the irony that their privileges came from natural resources that other Acehnese children should also have enjoyed.
The pattern later spread to urban middle-class housing. Houses rose high behind high fences, neighbours ceased to know one another, and children were kept away from those ‘not of their level’. This contradicts village neighbourliness, where fences were planted with plants useful to neighbours, yards were shared playgrounds and children were seen as ‘village treasure’ guarded by all.
For sociolinguistic and identity studies, complex children are a key category for understanding language shift and the rise of an uprooted middle class. The issue is not only language but a sense of belonging to the land from which their families’ wealth derives.
