Dari objek ke subjek: Aceh sebagai disiplin ilmu tersendiriFrom object to subject: Aceh as a discipline in its own right
Gagasan abad ke-21A twenty-first-century proposal
The core proposition of Aceh studies is to move Aceh from the position of an object of research to that of a subject of knowledge. Nearly every established discipline in the social sciences and humanities has already 'met' Aceh, so the region has never lacked researchers. What is missing is a metaphysical and meta-theoretical assembly that would allow knowledge about Aceh to stand as a discipline with authentic roots. Starting this work in the twenty-first century is seen as late, but not too late.
Konsekuensinya bersifat praktis maupun teoretis.
The argument begins from the observation that reviving a spirit of knowledge in the twenty-first century means confronting a body of modern science that has already engineered world civilisation. Any attempt to revive the Acehnese sciences must therefore engage other disciplines, both those that have touched Aceh and those that have not. In practice, history, anthropology, sociology, political science and literary studies have almost all made Aceh a subject of inquiry. Hence the paradox: Aceh is rich in research, yet that knowledge is stored as part of other disciplines.
The move from object to subject is not a claim that everything about Aceh must be rewritten. Its task is narrower: to bind scattered findings to a metaphysical foundation and a meta-theoretical framework, so that Aceh is no longer treated merely as a case for theories formed elsewhere. Within this framework Aceh becomes the centre of understanding, and from that centre the local cosmos, the intellectual tradition and the systems of ideas living in society are traced.
The consequences are both theoretical and practical. Theoretically, concepts and terms born of the Acehnese experience are meant to be usable for understanding other ethnic groups in the archipelago and Southeast Asia, not only Aceh. Practically, the approach demands that Acehnese scholars carry out sustained knowledge-construction themselves, rather than stopping at quoting fragments of Acehnese ideas collected by outside researchers. The proposition underlies the later division of the field into disciplines, curricula and research agendas.
