Tamsil rimbunan bambu: wujud frikatifisasi ilmuThe bamboo grove: an image of knowledge fricativization

The bamboo grove is the paradigm's central image. Bamboo sounds when the wind blows yet does not sway or fall because its roots are strong; the stems shelter one another, put out shoots that stay close to the parent stem, and draw energy from everywhere without being watered. The image is rooted in Acehnese village life, where almost every gampong has a bamboo stand and the ancestors used bamboo in building the land (puga nanggroe). Knowledge fricativization is pictured as replanting ‘bamboos of knowledge’ on campus.

The image gathers several qualities desired in a scholarly tradition. First, resilience: bamboo sounds when struck by wind but does not fall, because its strength lies in its roots. Second, solidarity: the stems stand close and protect one another; the tall, mature ones (sulu) shelter the small. Third, regeneration: bamboo always puts out new shoots (rebong) that never stray far from the parent stem, a picture of young scholars who remain connected to their tradition. Fourth, self-sufficiency: bamboo needs no watering because it draws energy from everywhere.

The element of sound makes bamboo apt for the fricative idea. The rustle of wind among the stems and the creak of stems rubbing together make people tremble, as if a power lay behind the sound. The ‘bustle’ of bamboo and the blowing wind are thus the very form of fricativization: breath producing sound from a rooted body.

The image is also cultural. There is no village in Aceh without a bamboo grove, and none that does not use it, from decoration to shelter. The ancestors made bamboo their main tool in building the land (puga nanggroe). By choosing bamboo, the paradigm anchors its philosophy of science in an everyday Acehnese object, much as the sua torch does.

Its practical conclusion is to let all the roots of knowledge reside on campus. With complete roots, the institution is believed able to face the ‘winds of civilisation’ from any direction without losing its identity.
