Syarab al-‘Āsyiqīn (Minuman Segala Orang Berahi)Sharāb al-‘Āshiqīn (The Drink of Lovers)
Akhir abad ke-16/awal abad ke-17; diterjemahkan di Jawa Tengah sekitar pertengahan abad ke-18Late 16th/early 17th century; translated in Central Java around the mid-18th century
Sharāb al-‘Āshiqīn is Hamzah Fansuri's seven-chapter Sufi treatise leading the reader from the practice of the sharia to the summit of love and intoxication in God. It moves through sharia, path, reality and gnosis to the self-disclosure of the Essence, the divine attributes and passionate love (‘ishq). The work shows Hamzah's caution in speaking of gnosis while also interpreting the ecstatic sayings of the Sufis. Its reach extended to Java, where it was translated around the mid-18th century.
Judulnya, ‘minuman para pemabuk’, menandai tujuan kitab: menjelaskan bagaimana syatahat lahir.
The seven chapters form a ladder. The first, on the practice of the sharia, insists that dropping any one of sharia, path and reality leaves a person deficient, and that reality without sharia is ruin. The second presents the path as the beginning of reality, the third holds that the only way to reality is the way of the Prophet Muhammad, and the fourth sets out gnosis of God as a Being without six directions. Here Hamzah twice calls the matter 'exceedingly difficult' and closes by admitting that humans can speak of it only through metaphor.
The fifth chapter treats the self-disclosure of the Essence and the notion of non-determination (lā ta‘ayyun), the sixth the seven attributes and the pair Majesty and Beauty (Jalāl and Jamāl), and the seventh, on love and intoxication, is the summit of the journey. Hamzah also divides the people of reality into those with family and wealth whose hearts remain with God and those who fix their hearts on Him alone, citing Solomon and Alexander Dhu'l-Qarnayn as learned kings.
The title, 'the drink of the intoxicated', signals the book's aim: to explain how ecstatic utterances (shaṭaḥāt) arise. The words of Rumi and al-Hallaj are read as 'drunken speech', not the speech of the ego, and not to be imitated. This reading challenges Ahmad Daudy's view that separating sharia from reality was a core wujūdiyya doctrine.
