Makam Bukit Hagu, Pante RajaThe Bukit Hagu tombs, Pante Raja
Akhir abad ke-15 – awal abad ke-16 MLate 15th – early 16th century CE
Bukit Hagu in Pante Raja, Pidie Jaya, holds three graves in a row on a summit 134.95 metres above sea level, among them the tomb of Sultan Munawwar Syah ibn Muhammad Syah Lamuri. From that height there is a clear line of sight over the coast and the waters of the Strait of Malacca. The sultan's headstone bears Qur'an 61:13 and the phrase Samt al-‘Alam. Local people still use the summit for Qur'an study and samadiah prayers but no longer know who is buried there.
Nisan Sultan Munawwar Syah menyimpan dua teks utama.
MAPESA's altimetric survey puts the grave at 134.95 metres above sea level, almost five times the height of the Peudada site (27 metres), although the study itself describes it as nearly four times higher. The summit offers a clear line of sight to the Pante Raja shoreline, so the hill is interpreted as a natural fortress and watchtower from which shipping in the Strait of Malacca could be observed without the watchers being easily seen from below. The burial platform measures about 12.5 × 7 metres.
The three graves on the summit run from west to east: Sultan Munawwar Syah's at the western end, a grave with marble headstones in the middle, and at the eastern end a grave whose headstones are of transitional type, intermediate between the Pasai and Aceh Darussalam styles. The arrangement matters for chronology, because it is the transitional headstone that helps date the sultan, whose own stone carries no year.
The sultan's headstone bears two key texts. On the outer face of the head-stone is carved the phrase Samt al-‘Alam, interpreted as a directional or azimuth reference for sailors. Another carving quotes Qur'an 61:13 on help from God and imminent victory. The MAPESA study reads both as political messages rather than purely eschatological ones.
The site also illustrates a break in memory. A balai beut (Qur'an study hall) stands on the summit and residents regularly hold samadiah prayers there, yet the person buried is known only as ‘the old grave’. Hagu shows how an epigraphic reading can restore a historical narrative that local collective memory has lost.
