Hamzah Fansuri dan Hegel: membaca ‘spirit’ lintas tradisiHamzah Fansuri and Hegel: reading ‘spirit’ across traditions

Hamzah Fansuri aktif sekitar 1589–1607Hamzah Fansuri active c. 1589–1607

A proposed comparison between Hamzah Fansuri and G.W.F. Hegel (1770–1831) as two thinkers who both wrote about spirit. Hamzah is usually read alongside Ibn ‘Arabi, Hegel alongside Kant. The comparison highlights that Hamzah's thought was nearly contemporary with Descartes, yet in Aceh it was not carried forward by a continuing tradition as happened in Europe. It remains a research agenda rather than an established body of scholarship.

Perbedaan nasib keduanya menjadi pokok argumen.

Scholars do not agree on where or when Hamzah Fansuri was born. A widely cited view places him in the reign of Sultan ‘Ala al-Din Ri’ayat Syah al-Mukammil (1589–1604) and possibly into the early reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607–1636), while Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas suggests he died before 1607. On this dating Hamzah was nearly contemporary with René Descartes (1596–1650). Al-Attas also notes Hamzah's familiarity with the works of al-Bistami, al-Hallaj, al-Ghazali, ‘Attar, Rumi, ‘Iraqi, Sa’di, Shabistari and Jami, as well as Ibn ‘Arabi and al-Jili.

The proposed comparison with Hegel rests on a shared theme: both treat spirit as central to understanding being and knowledge. Isaiah Berlin, who also wrote on Hegel, is named as an entry point from the history of ideas. Bringing Western and Islamic thought into dialogue has precedents, such as Amin Abdullah on Kant and al-Ghazali and Ian Almond on Ibn ‘Arabi and Derrida. A Hamzah–Hegel comparison, however, has not yet been studied in depth.

The contrast in their fates is the core of the argument. In Europe, Descartes, Kant and Hegel ‘answered’ one another and gave rise to a modern tradition. Hamzah was answered only by his disciple Syamsuddin al-Sumatrani before his school lost support. Hegel went on to develop the idea of Geist, which on this argument drifted towards materialism in the West. The comparison aims to use philosophy and history as a mirror for Acehnese self-understanding, not to equate the two thinkers.
