Agenda riset ilmu sosial tentang masyarakat Muslim AcehA social-science research agenda for Muslim Aceh

This agenda stems from the diagnosis that research at Islamic higher-education institutions in Aceh is still dominated by historical, area-studies, philological and normative approaches. The behaviour of Muslim communities is rarely studied as a social phenomenon. To fill this gap, five domains are proposed: long-term ethnography, kinship and life-history studies, sociolinguistics, social anthropology of culture, and psychological anthropology of magic. All are directed at what is alive in Acehnese society today.

Ketiga, sosiolinguistik hampir absen.

Kelima, antropologi psikologis tentang magi.

First, ethnography requires researchers to live long with the community they study and to theorise their findings over subsequent years; such work is almost nowhere to be found. Second, kinship and life-history studies trace family networks or little-known figures, such as clan heads, village heads and the imuem meunasah, to understand social networks in remote areas. The focus on ordinary people is seen as highly promising, since Western scholars often spend years understanding a single family.

Third, sociolinguistics is nearly absent. Acehnese are familiar with ceumarot or teumeunak (swearing), yet the origins of this tradition and the influence of languages from outside Acehnese culture remain unstudied. Fourth, a social anthropology of culture is needed because Aceh's Islamic tradition and culture form one of Southeast Asia's most interesting social laboratories, while existing studies tend to be narrative and rarely compare Aceh with other traditions.

Fifth, a psychological anthropology of magic. Practices of healing and sorcery, black and white magic alike, persist despite religious prohibition; the question is why people trust formulas obtained from figures believed to master the unseen. Comparison with the bomoh tradition of the northern Malay Peninsula opens room for cross-regional study.

The agenda also points to newer themes such as cosmopolitanism and postmodernism, and notes the irony that social-science research on Muslim societies is mostly carried out by scholars without training in the Islamic sciences. Meanwhile, scholars outside Islamic institutions have developed the sociology of Islam, the sociology of religion, the anthropology of Islam and Islamic anthropology.
