Aboebakar Atjeh (Abu Bakar Aceh) lahir pada April 1909 di Kutaraja (sumber lain menyebut Peureumeu, Aceh Barat), putra Syah Abdurrahman, imam Masjid Raya Kutaraja. Ia belajar di dayah, Volksschool Meulaboh, dan Kweekschool Islamiyah di Sumatra Barat, serta sempat belajar di Mekkah, tanpa ijazah perguruan tinggi luar negeri. Ia aktif di Sarekat Islam dan Muhammadiyah, membantu penyusunan kamus Aceh–Belanda (1934), lalu sesudah kemerdekaan menjadi pejabat tinggi Kementerian Agama, pemimpin redaksi Mimbar Agama, dan anggota Konstituante dari Masyumi; ia juga terlibat dalam pembangunan Masjid Agung Al-Azhar dan Istiqlal. Karyanya yang produktif mencakup Sejarah Al-Qur’an, Pengantar Sejarah Sufi dan Tasawuf, kajian tarekat, dan Aliran Syi‘ah di Nusantara, yang menjadikannya salah satu pendukung tesis jejak Syi‘ah di Aceh. Ia wafat pada 17 Desember 1979.
Aboebakar Atjeh (Abu Bakar Aceh) was born in April 1909 in Kutaraja (other sources say Peureumeu, West Aceh), the son of Syah Abdurrahman, imam of the Kutaraja Great Mosque. He studied at dayah, the Volksschool in Meulaboh and the Kweekschool Islamiyah in West Sumatra, and briefly in Mecca, without a foreign university degree. Active in Sarekat Islam and Muhammadiyah, he helped compile the Acehnese–Dutch dictionary (1934), and after independence became a senior official of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, editor of Mimbar Agama and a Masyumi member of the Constituent Assembly; he was also involved in building the Al-Azhar and Istiqlal mosques. His prolific writings include a history of the Qur'an, an introduction to Sufism, studies of the tarekat and a book on Shi'ism in the archipelago, which made him a proponent of the thesis of Shi'a traces in Aceh. He died on 17 December 1979.
