Peuturi droe: kajian diri dalam tradisi intelektual AcehPeuturi droe: the study of the self in Acehnese intellectual tradition
Abad ke-16 (Hamzah Fansuri) dibandingkan dengan dasawarsa 1890-an di BaratSixteenth century (Hamzah Fansuri) compared with the 1890s in the West
Peuturi droe, 'knowing oneself', is the Acehnese term for a learning process that begins with understanding oneself and extends to helping others understand themselves. Aceh studies sets it beside the Western concepts of self-awareness and self-determination. Whereas the scientific analysis of self and identity in the West is commonly dated to the 1890s, the study of the self in Aceh is already visible in the sixteenth-century Sufi writings of Hamzah Fansuri. The comparison is used to argue that a metaphysical foundation for Acehnese learning has long existed.
The concept answers the question of how one can know that Acehnese history contains a search for the foundations of knowledge. The answer is that every thinker who produced works passed through a tradition of learning that starts with self-knowledge. In the Acehnese tradition, self-knowledge is not merely psychology but a Sufi path to understanding the relation between humankind, God and nature. Hamzah Fansuri's writings are seen as having awakened a new consciousness of Acehnese identity in later periods.
The chronological comparison with the West is polemical and should be read as such. The reference to Richard D. Ashmore and Lee Jussim, who identify the 1890s as the beginning of the scientific analysis of self and identity, serves to assert that self-consciousness in the Acehnese tradition was not a late arrival. The claim that Acehnese learning in the fifteenth century and earlier was 'too advanced for its time' is an interpretive judgement rather than the result of systematic comparison.
The critique attached to it matters more than the question of priority. In the age of royal splendour, attention went to the magnificence of the court and the reach of Acehnese ulama across the archipelago, yet almost no one seriously asked why the tradition of learning so strongly sustained Aceh Darussalam. Western scholars mapped the social and political life of the period without entering its metaphysics, while local narratives were reduced to myth or bedtime stories. Peuturi droe thus becomes a door for restoring hikayat and ulama writings to their status as authentic products of knowledge.
