Sub-bidang studi Aceh: filsafat, sejarah, sosiologi, antropologi, dan lainnyaSub-fields of Aceh studies: philosophy, history, sociology, anthropology and more

Sebagian besar cabang masih berupa kerangka.

A proposed division of Aceh studies into branches modelled on the social sciences and humanities: Acehnese Philosophy, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Literature, Archaeology, Politics and the Study of Religion. Its object is everything that happens in Acehnese space and time. The scheme asks whether each branch has its own ontological, epistemological and axiological grounding. Most branches remain at the level of an outline.

The scheme grows out of a deliberately unsettling question: is there any content when the word ‘Aceh’ is attached to history, economics, politics, sociology, anthropology, culture, literature and art? The social sciences and humanities were born in a European tradition; sociology grew with the Enlightenment and anthropology with colonialism. Within that tradition non-Western societies have mostly been objects. Post-modern theory and the discourse of indigenous knowledge challenge Western centrism, yet their analytical tools still come from the same tradition.

The comparison with ‘Eastern philosophy’ shows the problem. When every tradition outside the West is placed in a single ‘Oriental’ box, the distinctive roots of Islamic or Indian philosophy blur. Aceh, situated at the crossroads of South Asia, East Asia, Australia and Southeast Asia, faces a similar blurring. Each sub-field therefore has to be ‘dissected’ to establish its place within the forest of Eastern and Western knowledge.

The central argument is that Aceh has more ‘raw material’ of knowledge than finished products. Some Acehnese intellectual production has already been theorised; much still awaits it. The scheme offers a container for this material without building sectarian theory. Of the eight sub-fields, only Acehnese History is worked out in some detail; the others appear only as headings, together with notes on reference figures (Hamzah Fansuri, Nuruddin ar-Raniry, Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy, Ali Hasjmy, P. Ramlee) and on layers of metaphysics, meta-theory and meta-ethics.
