Perjalanan sang ‘abid: dari ibadah menuju fanâThe path of the ‘abid: from worship to fana
Peniruan atas pengalaman sang ‘abid kemudian melahirkan tarekat sekaligus risiko pengultusan guru.
In the Sufi understanding current in Aceh, anyone seeking God must first become an ‘abid, a servant who worships along the path of sharia. The journey runs from strengthening faith and self-surrender (islam) to fana, the state in which the servant feels he owns nothing. At its summit comes a choice between being God’s ‘friend’ or ‘uniting’ with Him, from which the idea of the saint (wali) arises. Imitation of the ‘abid’s experience then gives rise to the tarekat, along with the risk of venerating the master.
The concept of the ‘abid marks the lowest rung of servanthood: a servant or ‘slave’ of God who performs the rituals modelled by the prophets. The archetype is the Prophet’s retreat in the cave of Hira, where revelation came through Gabriel, a figure that philosophical exegesis calls the ‘active intellect’ for human reason. Departure towards God must therefore pass through worship, and the path of worship is sharia, sourced in the Qur’an and Sunna. This stage is understood as the strengthening of faith (i‘tiqad).
The closer the ‘abid draws to God, the more his selfhood fades until he becomes his true self. Once faith is upright he surrenders entirely; Sufi tradition calls this state of owning nothing fana. Stories circulate in Aceh of scholars or saints who ‘vanished’ during khalwat, a popular reflection of this stage.
Having ‘met’ the Kingdom of God, prophets return to earth to call people to tawhid, since humans tend to worship whatever seems to hold spirit, while jinn, Iblis and devils offer power without God. Some Sufis, ‘intoxicated’ with God, by contrast decline to return: their bodies remain on earth but their inner selves dwell in the divine Kingdom, and they read the world through ilm ladunni, knowledge granted directly by God. Beginners then imitate their methods, and so the tarekat arises. At this point the master may be venerated as a ‘holy man’, a tension that runs through the history of Sufism.
