Suaka Margasatwa Rawa Singkil, hamparan rawa gambut lebih dari 80.000 hektare di Aceh Singkil, Subulussalam, dan Aceh Selatan, adalah bagian Kawasan Ekosistem Leuser dan salah satu benteng terakhir orangutan Sumatra. Gambutnya bekerja seperti spons raksasa yang menyerap air pada musim hujan dan melepaskannya perlahan pada musim kemarau. Lae Tekhep, yang dijuluki ‘Amazon kecil’, menjadi gerbang ekowisata ke kawasan ini. Namun drainase untuk kebun sawit ilegal, perambahan, dan kebakaran gambut telah menghilangkan ribuan hektare, menyebabkan amblesan tanah, banjir, dan apa yang dapat dibaca sebagai involusi ekologis bagi warga di tepinya.
The Rawa Singkil Wildlife Reserve, an expanse of more than 80,000 hectares of peat swamp in Aceh Singkil, Subulussalam and South Aceh, is part of the Leuser Ecosystem and one of the last strongholds of the Sumatran orangutan. Its peat works like a giant sponge, absorbing water in the rainy season and releasing it slowly in the dry season. Lae Tekhep, nicknamed the ‘little Amazon’, is the ecotourism gateway to the area. Yet drainage for illegal oil palm, encroachment and peat fires have destroyed thousands of hectares, causing land subsidence, floods and what can be read as an ecological involution for the people on its edges.
