Clifford Geertz lahir di San Francisco pada 23 Agustus 1926 dan wafat di Philadelphia pada 30 Oktober 2006. Ia meraih PhD dari Harvard University (1956) berdasarkan riset lapangan di Jawa, lalu menjadi profesor ilmu sosial di Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1970–2000). Karya-karyanya, antara lain The Religion of Java (1960), Agricultural Involution (1963), Islam Observed (1968), dan The Interpretation of Cultures (1973), menjadikannya tokoh utama antropologi interpretatif. Dalam sejarah ilmu sosial di Aceh, ia dikenal sebagai pengusul program pelatihan penelitian ilmu sosial (1971) yang kemudian dijalankan di Banda Aceh sejak 1974.
Clifford Geertz was born in San Francisco on 23 August 1926 and died in Philadelphia on 30 October 2006. He earned his PhD at Harvard (1956) on the basis of fieldwork in Java and was professor of social science at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1970–2000). His works, including The Religion of Java (1960), Agricultural Involution (1963), Islam Observed (1968) and The Interpretation of Cultures (1973), made him a leading figure of interpretive anthropology. In the history of social science in Aceh he is known for proposing (1971) a social-science research training programme that was run in Banda Aceh from 1974.
