Tanoh aulia: Aceh sebagai tanah para waliTanoh aulia: Aceh as the land of the saints

The belief that Acehnese must never become unbelievers because their land belongs to the saints (aulia) forms the spiritual boundary of society. The dichotomy of kaphe (infidel) and aulia was translated by the ulama into a social paradigm, with the dayah as its seedbed. The idea lives in popular song lyrics and in texts on the origins of the Acehnese. Within it, defending the word of God is seen as an inheritance of custom.

The pairing of kaphe and aulia works as the spiritual boundary in Aceh. The Acehnese outlook that embraces this spirit rests on the conviction that Aceh’s soil belongs to the saints, making unbelief unfitting for its inhabitants. The ulama translated this boundary into a social paradigm, while the dayah served as the seedbed of culture and intellect.

The idea of the saints’ land also appears in a song by the Acehnese singer Rafly, which declares that the Acehnese will not become unbelievers because their land is tanoh aulia, and that readiness to give one’s life for the word of God is a custom inherited as heirloom. An Acehnese-language text by Affan Jamuda and A.B. Lila Wangsa states that before the migration from Persia there were already saints guarding Aceh as their own domain. The claim raises unresolved historical and theological questions, for example whether worshippers of God existed in the region before the Common Era.

Anthropologically, tanoh aulia can be read as a territorial cosmology granting religious legitimacy to collective identity. The kaphe dichotomy also helps explain why Christianity, represented by Portuguese and Dutch colonisers, tends to be remembered as ‘infidel’. This symbolic boundary strengthens solidarity but can also narrow the space for difference.

The belief that a scholar's ‘aura’ lives on after death explains the popularity of grave visits and makes this cosmology a starting point for understanding traditional Acehnese philosophy of life.

Java is also called a land of saints through its nine walis, but unlike Aceh, the walis’ influence in Java never entered statecraft; in Aceh Sufism once sheltered the sultanate’s government.
