Islamic thought in the Malay World can be read through four phases: local adaptation under the influence of Haramayn networks, reformism spread by print culture, political awakening towards nationhood, and Islamic revivalism since the 1970s. Each phase shows a distinctive pattern of adaptation, negotiation and innovation shaped by external influence and local dynamics. Aceh is present from the first phase, through the polemic between Nuruddin ar-Raniry and Hamzah Fansuri and the Meccan fatwa that ended the rule of the sultanas. The framework places the Malay region at the centre rather than the margins of the discourse of global Islamic revival.
