Daniel Andrew Birchok is an American historical anthropologist with an MA in Southeast Asian Studies (2004) and a PhD in anthropology and history (2013) from the University of Michigan, teaching since 2016 at the University of Michigan-Flint, now as associate professor. His fieldwork in Nagan Raya, Aceh, examines genealogy, ritual, grave visitation and Islamisation narratives, including the Habib Seunagan family, in the book project The Pasts of Islam: Islamization, Genealogy and Ritual in an Indonesian Province. He has also traced the history of Aceh's epithet Serambi Mekkah through narratives by HAMKA, Mohammad Said, Muhammadiyah and GAM, and through the archives of the Aceh Ulama Council.
