Dr. Saiful Mahdi adalah dosen statistika Universitas Syiah Kuala sejak 1994 dan alumnus Cornell University, Amerika Serikat. Ia mendirikan The Aceh Institute pada 2004 dan menjadi direktur pertama International Centre for Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies (ICAIOS) pada 2009–2013, serta dikenal sebagai kolumnis Harian Serambi Indonesia. Kritiknya di grup percakapan dosen pada 2019 tentang penerimaan CPNS di Fakultas Teknik USK berujung pada vonis pidana berdasarkan UU ITE dan penahanan pada 2021, yang memicu protes luas atas kebebasan akademik. Presiden Joko Widodo memberinya amnesti pada 12 Oktober 2021 setelah mendapat pertimbangan DPR. Istrinya adalah peneliti kebijakan publik Dian Rubianty.
Dr. Saiful Mahdi has taught statistics at Syiah Kuala University since 1994 and is an alumnus of Cornell University in the United States. He founded The Aceh Institute in 2004 and was the first director of the International Centre for Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies (ICAIOS) in 2009–2013, and is known as a columnist for the daily Serambi Indonesia. His 2019 criticism, in a faculty chat group, of civil-service recruitment at USK's Faculty of Engineering led to a criminal conviction under the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) law and imprisonment in 2021, sparking wide protest over academic freedom. President Joko Widodo granted him amnesty on 12 October 2021 after the House of Representatives gave its consideration. His wife is the public policy researcher Dian Rubianty.
