Martti Ahtisaari lahir pada 23 Juni 1937 di Viipuri (kini Vyborg, Rusia) dan menjadi diplomat Finlandia serta pejabat PBB, antara lain Utusan Khusus PBB untuk Namibia yang memimpin transisi kemerdekaan negara itu (1989–1990). Ia menjabat Presiden Finlandia (1994–2000), lalu mendirikan Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) pada 2000. Melalui CMI ia memediasi perundingan antara Pemerintah Indonesia dan GAM di Helsinki pada 2005, yang menghasilkan MoU Helsinki dan mengakhiri konflik bersenjata hampir tiga dekade di Aceh. Atas upaya perdamaiannya di Namibia, Aceh, Kosovo, dan tempat lain, ia menerima Hadiah Nobel Perdamaian 2008. Ia wafat di Helsinki pada 16 Oktober 2023.
Martti Ahtisaari was born on 23 June 1937 in Viipuri (now Vyborg, Russia) and became a Finnish diplomat and UN official, including UN Special Representative for Namibia, where he oversaw the transition to independence (1989–1990). He served as President of Finland (1994–2000) and founded the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) in 2000. Through CMI he mediated the 2005 Helsinki talks between the Indonesian government and GAM, which produced the Helsinki MoU and ended nearly three decades of armed conflict in Aceh. For his peace work in Namibia, Aceh, Kosovo and elsewhere he received the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize. He died in Helsinki on 16 October 2023.
