Joel S. Kahn adalah antropolog yang meraih PhD antropologi sosial dari London School of Economics (1974) dan wafat pada 1 Mei 2017. Ia memegang kursi antropologi di Monash University (1986–1992) lalu menjadi guru besar antropologi di La Trobe University (1992–2007) dan kemudian profesor emeritus. Riset awalnya tentang Minangkabau melahirkan Minangkabau Social Formations (1980) dan Constituting the Minangkabau (1993), disusul Other Malays (2006) tentang Malaysia urban. Ia juga menilai karya John Bowen tentang Gayo dan mengkaji film-film P. Ramlee dalam konteks modernitas Melayu.
Joel S. Kahn was an anthropologist who received his PhD in social anthropology from the London School of Economics (1974) and died on 1 May 2017. He held the chair of anthropology at Monash University (1986–1992), then was professor of anthropology at La Trobe University (1992–2007) and later emeritus professor. His early Minangkabau research produced Minangkabau Social Formations (1980) and Constituting the Minangkabau (1993), followed by Other Malays (2006) on urban Malaysia. He also assessed John Bowen's work on the Gayo and discussed P. Ramlee's films in the context of Malay modernity.
