Indonesia’s state Islamic universities (PTKIN) express the relation between religious and general sciences through visual metaphors: the tree of knowledge at UIN Malang, the spider’s web at UIN Yogyakarta, the twin towers at UIN Jakarta, the wheel of knowledge at UIN Bandung, the river of knowledge at UIN Antasari and the torch (sua) in the fricativisation paradigm at UIN Ar-Raniry. These metaphors mark a shift from the normative-theological paradigm of the early IAIN towards four paradigms: Islamisation, integration, interconnection and fricativisation. The four can be set on one spectrum, from the most Islam-centred, with Islam as filter, to the most spirit-centred. Reading these symbols helps us understand how each campus imagines the unity of knowledge.
