Latar belakangBackground

Lahir di Meunasah Aron, Darul Ihsan, Aceh Timur, pada 4 Juli 1948. Ia anggota DPR RI 1982–1992 dan anggota MPR 1997–1999, lalu dipilih DPRD sebagai Gubernur Aceh pada 25 November 2000 dengan wakil Azwar Abubakar. Ia dinonaktifkan pada 19 Juli 2004 dan pada 11 April 2005 Pengadilan Tindak Pidana Korupsi di Jakarta menjatuhkan hukuman 10 tahun penjara dalam perkara pengadaan helikopter Mi-2; ia bebas bersyarat pada 2009. Ia kemudian menjadi anggota DPD RI dari Aceh 2019–2024.

Born in Meunasah Aron, Darul Ihsan, East Aceh, on 4 July 1948. He was a member of the national House of Representatives 1982–1992 and of the MPR 1997–1999, then elected by the provincial council as Governor of Aceh on 25 November 2000 with deputy Azwar Abubakar. He was suspended on 19 July 2004, and on 11 April 2005 the anti-corruption court in Jakarta sentenced him to 10 years over the purchase of Mi-2 helicopters; he was paroled in 2009. He later sat in the Regional Representative Council (DPD) for Aceh 2019–2024.
